Smart Level Control Systems Support Safety in Liquid Transportation

Smart level control systems contribute to safer filling and discharge operations in tankers engaged in liquid transportation. These systems reduce operational risks by integrating level, pressure and temperature monitoring with automatic alarm and emergency shutdown mechanisms. In Türkiye, some local manufacturers are also developing solutions in this field.

    Sectoral and Technical Structure

The infrastructure of these systems can be designed in a modular architecture that includes level measurement sensors, pressure and temperature monitoring units, valve position verification switches and, where necessary, emergency shutdown chains. With solutions operating together with on-tank control panels and data recording units, the system can automatically activate shut-off or alarm mechanisms if the liquid level in filling lines exceeds a critical threshold. In this way, operational hazards such as overflow, exceeding capacity or incorrect filling are minimized.

    Standards and Certification Framework

Within the scope of dangerous goods transportation, the EN 13094 standard, which applies to tank design and equipment layout, defines the structural requirements and safe construction conditions for tankers.

For level control devices and level-alarm systems, especially where suitability for explosive atmospheres is required, standards such as ATEX 2014/34/EU play a critical role. Sensors and systems that are explosion-proof and compliant with these norms are preferred for safe use in dangerous goods tankers. For example, some maritime-oriented level measurement systems are equipped with ATEX / IEC-Ex certified sensors and control units.

    National and International Context

In Türkiye, there are companies producing such level control systems, and these systems can be designed for use in ADR-compliant tankers. On the other hand, when compliance with international standards is ensured — both in terms of tanker structure and equipment safety — these solutions appear suitable for consideration not only in domestic transportation but also in international logistics operations.

Research and Development and Engineering Dimension

The trend of technological development in the sector is directed toward radar and digital sensors, automatic monitoring, alarm–control integration and data recording systems. For example, non-contact radar level sensors (high-frequency radar tank gauges) provide advantages in accuracy and reliability for liquid level measurement, while 4–20 mA / HART output facilitates integration with analog or digital control systems. In addition, magnetic and static-principle level switches — by minimizing maintenance requirements and mechanical wear — offer high safety and low operating costs.

The modular design of these systems provides adaptability for different tank types as well as various liquids and hazard categories, which constitutes a significant advantage for both local and international transportation operations.

Smart level control systems stand out as important technological elements that enhance safety and operational efficiency in liquid transportation. With equipment compliant with standards and regulations and well-considered engineering solutions, risks are reduced during filling and discharge stages, while control and monitoring convenience is provided throughout transportation processes.
