In recent years, significant changes have been taking place in safety standards and monitoring technologies in tanker and silo trailers used for the transport of dangerous substances or bulk cargoes. In these vehicles, critical elements such as pressure management, leak tightness, valve safety and structural strength are being subjected to stricter technical tests both at the production stage and during operation.

Since the 2020s, new technologies that increase energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact have been coming to the fore in international cold chain transportation. In Europe, electric and hybrid cooling units — “carbon-neutral” refrigerated trailer systems supported by solutions such as solar panels, batteries and e-axles (electric axles) — are signaling a significant transformation.

In Türkiye, production processes compliant with the internationally recognized EN 12642-XL standard are being adopted in the manufacture of tipper and construction-purpose trailers in terms of load safety and superstructure durability. With this transition, the aim is to ensure that trailer superstructures can securely retain loads under static and dynamic forces.

In Türkiye, the type approval processes used in the production of special-purpose trailers, semi-trailers and towed caravans are being restructured in line with international norms. Within this scope, pre- and post-production tests are becoming mandatory for both mechanical coupling systems and the interior electrical installations of caravans and trailer superstructures. This regulation aims to enhance manufacturer quality assurance, user safety and technical compliance.

Digital load management and telematics infrastructures are rapidly becoming widespread in vehicle carrier, container carrier and waste/scrap transport trailers used for logistics and recycling purposes. Trailer manufacturers and fleet operators aim to increase load stability, operational safety and transport efficiency by integrating sensor-based load monitoring, real-time location tracking and data analytics technologies.

In Türkiye, a comprehensive transformation is on the agenda in the areas of safety, superstructure durability and compliance with international transport standards for refrigerated semi-trailers as well as ADR-certified tanker and silo trailers. In tanker semi-trailers used for the transport of dangerous goods and in refrigerated superstructures that ensure cold chain logistics, compliance with ADR (European Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) is accepted as a fundamental requirement.

In Türkiye, the lowbed, semi lowbed and modular trailer classes used in heavy-load transportation are increasingly being addressed through a more systematic engineering approach in terms of both structural safety and vehicle coupling geometry. Manufacturers are incorporating technical processes into production planning aimed at verifying chassis strength, the suitability of connection points and load-carrying behavior, which are of critical importance in high-tonnage transport. Public policies and sectoral incentives are also paving the way for the development of products aligned with international market expectations.

In Türkiye, there has been an increase in production and certification processes compliant with the EN 12642-XL standard, which is considered important in terms of “cargo safety,” for trailer (semi-trailer) superstructures used in general cargo transportation. This standard aims to raise quality across the sector in terms of transport safety, superstructure durability and alignment with international norms.

In recent years, trailer production in Türkiye has been undergoing a significant transformation in terms of structural safety, material technologies, certification processes and production capacity. In particular, the tendency toward compliance with international standards — led by EN 12642-XL — in the areas of load securing and superstructure durability has increased markedly.
