Trailer Superstructures Reinforced with New Standards
In Türkiye, production processes compliant with the internationally recognized EN 12642-XL standard are being adopted in the manufacture of tipper and construction-purpose trailers in terms of load safety and superstructure durability. With this transition, the aim is to ensure that trailer superstructures can securely retain loads under static and dynamic forces.
What Is EN 12642-XL? Technical Requirements and Tests
The EN 12642 standard defines minimum strength criteria for side walls, front/rear walls, roof, floor and the overall structure of commercial vehicle and trailer/semi-trailer superstructures.
The reinforced superstructure design in the XL class offers significantly higher durability compared with standard superstructures. In static tests, deformation is monitored; in dynamic tests, the structure’s strength is verified by simulating braking, maneuvering and driving conditions under load.
When proper loading (“positive-fit”) is applied, an XL-certified superstructure resists forces exerted by the load from all directions; this means a high level of safety even when the use of securing equipment is limited.
Application in Tipper and Construction Trailers
The superstructure durability of tipper and open-platform trailers used in construction, excavation and heavy-load transportation must be higher than that of standard curtain-sided or box-type semi-trailers.
EN 12642-XL certified superstructures, through reinforced side walls, front and rear sections, roof and floor integrity, allow the load to remain stable by bearing against the superstructure, reducing risks such as shifting, tipping and swaying.
Sectoral Impact of the Standard
The use of EN 12642-XL compliant tipper and construction trailers provides significant benefits in terms of load stability, road safety and the reduction of operational risks. The superstructure’s active role in load securing can increase operational efficiency and, in some cases, reduce the need for additional securing equipment.
Current Situation
While the standard is widely applied at the international level, publicly available data on the share of EN 12642-XL compliant tipper and construction trailers in total production in Türkiye remain limited. However, it is observed that the tendency among manufacturers to transition to this standard is strengthening.
