Update in Production and Certification Structure
In Türkiye, the type approval processes used in the production of special-purpose trailers, semi-trailers and towed caravans are being restructured in line with international norms. Within this scope, pre- and post-production tests are becoming mandatory for both mechanical coupling systems and the interior electrical installations of caravans and trailer superstructures. This regulation aims to enhance manufacturer quality assurance, user safety and technical compliance.
Standards and Type Approval Systems: UNECE R55 and EN 1648
The UNECE R55 standard, which defines the safety of mechanical coupling devices between the vehicle and the semi-trailer, requires towing and coupling components to be tested in terms of strength, coupling safety, installation accuracy and operational safety.
The EN 1648 standard, applicable to electrical installations used in towed caravans with living spaces, defines safety, functionality and installation rules for 12 V DC low-voltage systems.
The combined application of these two standards establishes an internationally recognized framework by ensuring the integrity of mechanical safety and electrical safety in special-purpose trailers and caravans.
Type Approval Certification and Compliance Process
In Türkiye, the type approval process is conducted by TSE and the Ministry of Industry and Technology. Whether under EC Type Approval or National Type Approval, semi-trailers, trailers and caravans must obtain this certification as a prerequisite for production and registration.
The process consists of prototype tests, technical documentation reviews, component compatibility assessments and production conformity audits. Once type approval is granted, the manufacturer can carry out serial production based on the same type, which represents both standardization and legal compliance for road operation.
Technical Design and Safety Practices
Due to R55 compliance, couplings, towing equipment, axle–chassis structures and connection geometry are being redesigned based on engineering principles. This design approach ensures the safe and stable operation of the tractor unit–trailer combination.
Within the scope of EN 1648, electrical installations apply European norms for cable routing, insulation, fuse arrangements and equipment compatibility criteria.
International Compliance and Market Expansion
Production compliant with R55 and EN 1648 aligns directly with EU legislation and UNECE type approval systems, increasing the likelihood that caravans and special-purpose semi-trailers produced in Türkiye will be accepted in international markets. This provides companies with advantages in terms of exports and cross-border technical compliance.
Overall Sector Outlook
In Türkiye’s special-purpose trailer production, a modern manufacturing model is taking shape based on compliance with mechanical coupling and electrical installation standards, regular type approval processes and production control systems. This development is regarded as a strategic step that enhances safety and legal compliance in the domestic market while strengthening competitiveness in external markets.
